The album was created over a three week period in January 2010 while wait what was an employee of Google.[6] He created it in Logic Pro on his laptop across various locations, including his sister's Williams College apartment, Aspen, New Orleans, Zurich, London, Denver, Chicago and finally his San Francisco apartment.[7] He maintained the same track order as the original xx album and used acapellas from three Notorious B.I.G. albums and one Puff Daddy album.
Overall, the album was received very well. Fans voted several of the songs to the top of The Hype Machine's[8] popular chart, New York Magazine called it "really great stuff,"[3] Sputnik labeled it "a combination that is sublime,"[9] and The Guardian noted that it "works amazingly well...impressive.".[10] Members of The xx also mentioned enjoying the album in a number of interviews,[11] and it received attention from NPR, music critic Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker , and Marc Jacobs,[12] among others.
Additionally, there is a video for "juicy-r" that pairs footage from the original videos for Juicy and VCR.
On April 6, 2010 he received a takedown request from Warner Music Group.[2] After receiving advice from Girl Talk, Elizabeth Stark, EFF, and Lawrence Lessig,[13] he complied and removed official download links from his site.
